What Do Parrots Eat ? A Whole List Of Fruits, Vegetables, Grains and Seeds

A parrot’s diet consists primarily of fruits, vegetables, nuts, insects, and flowers. People frequently make the error of providing excessive bird seed (which is more of a treat) to their pets. Parrots  can occasionally eat meat because they are omnivores. Keep in mind  that chocolate and avocados are two poisonous foods to avoid.

Several popular foods for pet birds are listed below. We’ve also indicated how much, if any, of each food should be included in your bird’s diet. If you are unsure about any product that is not listed in this guide, simply do not give it to your bird! There are numerous foods that have been proven to be safe for your pet parrot to consume. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Parrot Food List

Can parrots eat grapes? Yes, but in moderation.

Your parrot can eat grapes, but you should limit how much you give them. You should limit the amount of grapes your parrot eats for two main reasons. First, it is a fruit with a high percentage of sugar that shouldn’t make up a substantial amount of your bird’s diet.

The second reason to be cautious with grapes is that they are one of the fruits with the highest pesticide contamination rate. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s testing of grapes revealed that grapes have up to 56 distinct pesticide residues. A simple rinse will make the grapes safe for human consumption, but even a small amount of pesticide can harm a small bird. Make sure you properly wash the grapes before you give them to your parrot.

Conures and other small birds shouldn’t consume more than one grape every day. Budgies should eat less, perhaps half a grape cut up into small bits. For your smaller birds, putting a grape on a skewer is a good idea. Bigger parrots can enjoy a couple of grapes in a dish, but don’t overfeed the sugary fruits to them.

Can parrots eat cherries? Yes (if the seeds are removed).

Cherries are rich in Vitamin C and also include Vitamin A, calcium, protein, and iron, making them a pleasant source of essential nutrients. The flesh of cherries is tasty to parrots, and many of them adore cherries. They’ll create a wreck out of them, and their droppings will change color as a result of the cherries. If you feed your birds cherries and then notice red or black droppings, don’t panic, it’s normal.

You shouldn’t let your parrots eat cherry pits. Cherry pits usually have cyanide traces in them. Never give your bird access to seeds or pits since parrots enjoy crushing them. Before letting your parrots near the fruit, make sure to remove all the pits. They are toxic, so you shouldn’t allow your parrots to consume them.

Incorporating them into bread or presenting them in little, chopped-up bits in a food bowl are two ways to serve cherries that are less messy than the raw fruit. This can help to reduce splatter when your parrot eats cherries.

Can parrots eat oranges? In moderation.

Oranges are a type of citrus fruit, and citrus fruits in general have a high acidic concentration. Acidic fruit affects us by requiring our bodies to compensate for the pH difference between the fruit and our normal pH of 7. This happens in an instant, though in some people, a lack of acid or alkalinity in the blood can impair your ability to metabolize these nutrients.

You can let your bird eat oranges as long as you’re careful about how much you give it. If you decide to offer them orange juice, make sure to dilute it as much as you can with water and give them very little of it. Portion sizes should be modified according to the size of your parrot.

Oranges are high in vitamin C, A, and B vitamins, as well as dietary fiber and potassium. When given in moderation, they can be a tasty and interesting addition to your parrot’s diet as well as an occasional juicy, healthful treat.

Can parrots eat bananas? Yes.

Your bird can eat bananas because they are a nutritious fruit. These give your bird buddy vitamins and protein and are naturally free of sodium, fat, and cholesterol. Bigger parrots might like to peel the fruit themselves, and doing so will provide them a more enjoyable foraging experience. If you are offering your birds whole bananas, make sure to scrub the fruit to get rid of any pesticide residue. Smaller birds can be fed by cutting up some portions and putting them in a bowl or on a skewer.

You should only feed your bird fresh bananas. According to harmonyhousefoods.com, dried bananas should be avoided unless you are convinced that they were stored without sulfur dioxide. The fact that your parrot weighs a fraction of what you do means that it cannot handle sulfur dioxide as well as you can because it causes allergic reactions in many humans and parrots.

Still, your bird will like the fresh fruit, and you can blend it with other fresh fruits to give it a change from its regular diet.

Can parrots eat strawberries? Yes.

Strawberries are a favorite food of many parrots. After removing the seeds, they like to eat the fruit by digging in. It should be noted that some parrots almost appear to enjoy flinging strawberry chunks around their cage, which can make the cleaning process much more complicated.  Prepare to do some serious cleaning when your birds have finished eating their strawberries.

In addition to providing a good amount of vitamin C, strawberries also contain small levels of other nutrients. Strawberries have the unfortunate reputation of being among the most polluted fruits we eat. They can  contain up to three times as much pesticides as other fruits..

As bad as it is for us to consume these poisons, it is considerably worse for our beloved parrots because of their small size. To ensure that there are no remaining pesticide traces, properly wash all strawberries before you give them to your birds. As an alternative, consider organic foods.

Can parrots eat tomatoes? In moderation.

Fresh tomatoes can give your pet parrot ulcers because they are an acidic fruit. Tomatoes dried without sulfur can be used sparingly because the majority of the acid is eliminated during the drying process. You can also feed your parrot with  plain spaghetti sauce made with cooked tomatoes but without other ingredients like sugar or salt.

Bird experts state that while the tomato itself is acidic, the vines and leaves are deadly to parrots and should never be given to your bird. If you have a huge parrot and like to feed it with tomatoes, ensure all leaves and stems have been removed.

The acid problem is only apparent in fresh tomatoes because boiling lessens the acidity. There have been cases of parrots eating raw tomatoes and then vomiting blood many days later, most likely due to the development of ulcers, so if you insist on feeding fresh tomatoes to your birds, use extreme caution.

Can parrots eat pineapple? Yes.

Pineapple is a strong source of vitamin C and can be consumed by parrots. The amount you give your bird should be carefully regulated, just like with all sugary fruits, as a diet high in sugar is bad for long-term health. Fresh pineapple can be prepared as wedges or slices for larger birds, or it can be finely chopped and offered with other fruit for smaller birds.

There is dried pineapple available, but it must not have been dried with sulfur dioxide if you want to give it to your parrot. This is a general warning for all dried fruits, and it can occasionally be challenging to tell if your dried fruit is sulfur-free. If you are unsure, give your parrot something else to eat.

Can parrots eat watermelon? Yes.

Fruits like watermelon are safe for your parrot to eat. Let the seeds in; they won’t mind the seeds and will enjoy the luscious fruit. Your birds will most likely pick off the seeds first before moving on to the rest of the fruit. Some pet owners choose to extract the seeds and soak them in water overnight to soften them for their pets’ birds.

There is some controversy regarding the rind of the melon. It often has a waxy coating that is used to preserve the fruit during transport, and this needs to be removed before you let your bird nibble on the rind. There is also the potential for pesticides to become trapped in the porous skin of the watermelon, posing another potential problem.

Most parrots ignore the peel of a melon and just eat the fruit and seeds. The safest method is to just not give your bird the rind. They will have plenty to eat without that part of the fruit.

Can parrots eat meat? Not recommended.

Parrots are omnivorous birds, which means they can eat both plant and animal-based foods. While parrots in the wild primarily consume fruits, seeds, and nuts, they may also consume insects and small animals such as snails or lizards on occasion. This suggests that including a small amount of meat in a parrot’s diet may benefit their health.

Given that meat is not a natural component of parrots’ diets, pet owners should exercise caution when thinking about giving their feathered friends meat. Meat should be introduced gradually and in moderation. A parrot’s diet should primarily consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as high-quality pellet mixes designed specifically for parrots. Any addition of meat should be viewed as a supplement to their current diet.

When introducing meat into a parrot’s diet, begin with small amounts and gradually increase the amount over time. It is best to serve cooked lean meats like chicken or turkey without bones, skin, or seasoning. Parrots should not be fed processed meats such as sausages or bacon. Raw meat should also be avoided because it contains pathogens.

Furthermore, pet owners must ensure that the meat is fresh and free of any preservatives or additives that could be harmful to their parrot’s health. To reduce the risk of bacterial infection, meat should be thoroughly cooked, with no pink or raw areas.

It’s also worth noting that not all parrots are interested in or can tolerate meat in their diet. Some parrots may have digestive issues when eating meat, while others may simply be uninterested. If a parrot does not want to eat meat, pet owners should not force it on them.

Can parrots eat chocolate? No.

It is essential to know that chocolate is toxic to parrots, and pet owners should avoid giving any chocolate to their feathered friends. Although small amounts of chocolate may not immediately cause death in parrots, it is still a harmful substance that can cause severe health complications in these animals. Chocolate is not only toxic to parrots, but it is also harmful to all birds and mammals. When consumed in large quantities, chocolate can be lethal for many animals, and they would need to ingest around 1/7th of their body weight for the toxicity to kill them.

Even small parrots can be in grave danger after consuming as little as 1/2 ounce (14 g) of chocolate, and larger parrots can quickly consume enough to lead to severe health consequences. Therefore, it is crucial to keep all chocolate and other caffeinated substances away from parrots, regardless of their size.

Chocolate contains two toxic substances that can harm birds. The first is caffeine, which should never be given to your bird in any form, including soft drinks and sodas. The second harmful substance is theobromine, which is present in cocoa. Parrots and many other animals, including humans, cannot metabolize theobromine correctly, which can lead to several health complications and even death. There have been numerous reports of parrot deaths related to chocolate consumption, and it is imperative to seek immediate veterinary assistance if your bird has ingested any chocolate.

Can parrots eat carrots? Yes.

Parrots can eat carrots. Carrots, whether raw or lightly cooked, are a healthy vegetable that offers a great source of dietary fiber, Vitamins A, C, and K, as well as Potassium. To make it easier for your parrot to eat, you can chop them up or slice them into thin sticks that your bird can hold onto while enjoying their snack.

Can parrots eat popcorn? In moderation.

Popcorn is a good treat for your parrot, but you should only give it to them if it has been air-popped, is unsalted, and doesn’t have any added oils. Salt should never be given to your birds in any form, and many types of popcorn contain a lot of it. Microwavable popcorn should be avoided because it produces many minute particles that could be harmful to your parrot.

Can parrots eat cheese? Not recommended.

It is important for parrot owners to know that their feathered friends are partially lactose intolerant. This means that they are not able to efficiently process dairy foods, such as milk, that contain high concentrations of lactose. Although it may be tempting to give your parrot a taste of your dairy products, it is important to avoid doing so, as it could lead to discomfort and digestive issues.

However, there are some hard cheeses that are low in lactose and can be offered to your bird in small amounts. It is essential to monitor your parrot’s droppings after feeding them cheese, as any sign of diarrhea could indicate that the cheese is causing digestive problems. If this occurs, it is best to remove cheese from your parrot’s diet permanently, as there is no reason to feed them a food that causes them discomfort.

Can parrots eat asparagus? Not recommended.

There is some debate over the use of asparagus as a parrot food. Some varieties can produce berries that, while toxic to humans, may not be harmful to wild birds. Although small amounts of cooked or raw asparagus appear to be acceptable if fed on a regular basis, the berries should never be offered to parrots. You should probably pick a different vegetable because it’s better to be safe than sorry when your bird health is at risk.

Can parrots eat celery? Not recommended.

Although celery is not inherently harmful to parrots, the fibrous strings in celery can be problematic for birds. The strings can cause crop impaction or constipation, which can be a life-threatening condition. Due to these potential health risks, it is best to avoid adding celery to your parrot’s regular diet. While celery does offer some nutritional value, such as vitamin K and fiber, it’s important to weigh the risks against the benefits.

It’s better to be cautious  and select other vegetables that pose no risk to your bird’s health. If you do decide to feed celery to your parrot, it’s crucial to remove the strings and chop it into small pieces to make it easier for your bird to digest. As with all foods, monitor your bird’s reaction to celery, and if you notice any negative symptoms, it’s best to avoid feeding it altogether.

Can parrots eat raisins? In moderation.

Due to their high sugar content, raisins should only make up a small portion of your parrot’s diet. Boxed raisins intended for human consumption should be avoided because they typically contain added sugars and sodium that are toxic to your parrot. The best option might be to buy dried raisins that are organic from a health food store. When feeding dried fruit to your pet parrot, make sure the drying process does not include sulfur. It should be avoided even though it is only present in trace amounts because it could potentially harm your bird.

Can parrots eat pistachios? In moderation.

Pistachio nuts, like all nuts, should be consumed in moderation. Another thing to remember is that you should never feed your bird salted or sweetened nuts. Pistachios, as an oily nut, will spoil in hot, humid weather. For longer storage, keep them refrigerated or in a dark, cool place. When compared to other nuts, pistachio nuts have a low fat content, making them less problematic to feed birds if you are worried about their weight.

Can parrots eat blueberries? Yes.

Your bird can eat blueberries without any problems. They contain a ton of nutrients, including fiber, copper, and vitamins K and C. Wash the berries thoroughly before serving them to your birds whole. With small birds like budgies, a skewer works well. Conures enjoy holding blueberries in their claws and eating them like an apple. Of course, larger parrots enjoy them as well. They can leave stains around the cage, so be prepared for the mess.

Can parrots eat pecans? In moderation.

Pecans are safe for parrots to eat. They have the highest fat concentration per ounce of any nut. Most nuts should be consumed in moderation to avoid excessive weight gain. This is not always the case for macaws, who eat nuts and require more fat than other parrots.

Can parrots eat chicken? Not recommended.

Chicken should not be a regular part of a parrot’s diet, though they can occasionally consume it in small amounts. Despite being omnivores, parrots rarely eat meat in the wild, and when they do, it’s usually insects. Keep in mind that chicken antibiotics and hormones can be especially harmful to your pet bird.

Vegetable fats are easily digested by parrots, but animal fats, like the kind found in chicken, present more of a challenge. Excessive protein consumption can also increase breeding behavior and cause behavioral problems in non-breeding birds.

Can parrots eat almonds? Yes.

Almonds are a good source of calcium, vitamin E, antioxidants, and protein. In order to reduce the chance of your bird gaining weight, keep the portions small, just like with other fatty nuts.

The most important factor to consider when feeding almonds is how they are pasteurized. Fears of salmonella prompted this practice in the early 2000s. Some almonds are pasteurized with propylene oxide gas, which is a known carcinogen. Amounts considered safe for humans are unlikely to be safe for parrots. To reduce potential health issues in your bird, try to obtain almonds that have been pasteurized through steaming or oil roasting.

Can parrots eat cucumbers? Yes.

Cucumbers, including the seeds, can be eaten by parrots. You should try to buy organic cucumbers or grow your own. A problem with commercially grown cucumbers is that they are frequently coated with vaseline or a waxy substance to preserve them. You must remove the coating before you gave it it to your parrots. One method is to peel the vegetable before giving it to your pets, as well as give it a thorough wash and scrub. It might be more effective to cut it into smaller pieces as opposed to larger slices.

Can parrots eat eggs? In moderation.

Parrots are capable of consuming both eggs and eggshells, which is a natural behavior exhibited by wild parrots who may steal and consume the eggs of other birds. Providing eggs as part of their diet can be beneficial for your pet as they are a rich source of protein, calcium, and essential amino acids. However, it is important to note that there is a risk of hormone transfer from the egg-producing birds to your pet, so it is recommended to feed eggs in moderation. If you plan to serve cooked eggs to your bird, be sure to let them cool down before feeding.

Can parrots eat cantaloupe? Yes.

Parrots have a fondness for melons, including cantaloupe. When presented with a slice, they will probably consume the seeds first and then the fruit. However, it is important to exercise caution when offering the rind to your parrot. Due to its potential toxicity and the small size of parrots, it is best to avoid giving them the rind. Additionally, the porous nature of the rind makes it difficult to ensure that it is completely free of any lingering traces of pesticides, so it is better to be cautious.

Can parrots eat peanut butter? Not recommended.

Aflatoxin, a cancer-causing substance found in peanuts, is present in commercial peanut butter in smaller amounts than in the nut itself. This is a rare case where processed food is better for your bird than the product in its natural state. However, because peanut butter contains a lot of salt and sugar, we don’t recommend feeding it to your bird.

Can parrots eat kiwi? Yes.

Your bird might indeed enjoy kiwis, as do many parrots. Slice them open and then cut them into size-appropriate pieces based on your parrot’s species. Most parrots love the kiwi seeds and will eagerly pick them out, though some may prefer to eat the fruit’s flesh.

Kiwi is high in vitamins C, K, and E. It also provides fiber and antioxidants to your parrot. It’s a refreshing fruit and a tasty treat for your bird.

Can parrots eat pomegranates? Yes.

Parrots can consume and enjoy pomegranates, making them a great addition to your pet’s diet. However, it is important to note that pomegranates can be quite messy, so it’s best to take necessary precautions to protect the surrounding area before feeding this fruit to your pet.

To feed pomegranates to your parrot, a suggested method is to make a cut in the top of the fruit and then break it into large chunks.

Larger chunks are suitable for bigger birds, while smaller sections can be torn off for smaller parrots. According to experts, pomegranates are a rich source of Vitamin C, phosphorus, and calcium, all of which are beneficial for your parrot’s health.

In addition to the nutritional benefits, pomegranate seeds are also safe for your parrot to consume. These seeds contain antioxidants that can help boost your pet’s immune system and aid in digestion. Overall, incorporating pomegranates into your parrot’s diet can be a healthy and enjoyable experience for both you and your feathered friend.

Can parrots eat onions? No.

Due to the presence of sulfoxides in cooked or raw onions, many animals, including birds, cannot tolerate them. As a result, it is highly recommended that you keep all types of onions, including shallots and garlic, away from your pet bird. Consuming even a small amount of onion, equivalent to 0.5% of the bird’s body weight, can lead to toxicosis, which can be very harmful for your feathered friend. As pointed out by bestbirdfoodever.com, this amount of onion is relatively small, but it can still have serious consequences for your parrot’s health.

Given the weight of most parrots, it is important to be very cautious and avoid giving them any cooked, raw, or dehydrated onions. These foods can cause significant distress for your bird, and in some cases, they can even be fatal. Therefore, it is important to always be mindful of the potential dangers of onions and related plants, and to keep them out of reach of your pet bird.

Can parrots eat or drink milk? Not recommended.

Milk and other dairy products generally have high lactose content. Parrots are lactose intolerant, which makes sense given where the majority of species originate. Because not all parrots are lactose intolerant, some can consume small amounts of dairy products.

After a meal of dairy products, your bird will experience diarrhea, with the solid portion of the droppings being runny. Although some parrots appear to enjoy dairy products, there is no nutritional benefit to feeding dairy to your birds.

Can parrots eat radishes? Yes.

Your bird can consume the entire radish, including the greens. In fact, some birds favor the green leaves. Use organic radishes or thoroughly clean the vegetables before feeding them to your birds.

Can parrots eat peanuts? Not recommended.

You should probably avoid feeding your parrot with peanuts. Aflatoxin, a fungal toxin that can cause liver damage, is frequently found in peanuts. According to experts, parrots are up to 200 times more sensitive to aflatoxin than humans, so even human-grade peanuts could be harmful to your bird.

Can parrots eat mushrooms? No.

Since many mushrooms are poisonous, we generally advise against giving your parrots any mushrooms to eat. Cooking mushrooms removes the majority of the toxins, but trace amounts may remain. These trace amounts can still harm your parrot, so it’s best to be safe and avoid feeding fungus to your birds.

Can parrots eat cinnamon? Yes.

Cinnamon is a safe and healthy spice that can be incorporated into your parrot’s diet. In fact, the sweet and enticing flavor of cinnamon may even help encourage your bird to consume a wider variety of healthy foods. Moreover, cinnamon has been known to help regulate blood sugar levels in both humans and parrots.

This spice is an excellent source of dietary fiber, calcium, and iron. These essential nutrients are crucial for maintaining your parrot’s overall health and well-being. Fiber helps regulate digestion and promote a healthy gut microbiome, while calcium and iron are important for strong bones and healthy blood circulation.

By incorporating cinnamon into your parrot’s diet, you can help provide them with a range of health benefits. However, it’s important to keep in mind that moderation is key. While cinnamon is safe for most parrots, excessive consumption can lead to digestive problems or other health issues. So, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian and follow their advice on the appropriate amount of cinnamon to give your bird.

Can parrots eat bread? In moderation.

The majority of parrots can eat bread without any digestive issues, but it should only be given to them occasionally and not as a staple of their diet. Your pet can occasionally nibble on some bread that you are eating. The best part about bird bread is that you can bake foods and medicines into it that your bird would normally refuse to eat.

Can parrots eat fish? Not recommended.

Our pet parrots can eat fish, but we don’t advise it. Mercury is present in fish due to pollution of our oceans, and fish is not a natural diet for parrots. Parrots can get protein from better sources because they are more adapted to them.

Can parrots eat insects? Yes.

As omnivores, parrots have the ability to consume both animal and plant-based foods. In their natural habitat, parrots are known to eat a variety of insects, and this can be replicated in your pet bird’s diet without causing any harm.

In fact, feeding your parrot insects can provide them with a source of protein and other essential nutrients that they may not be getting from their regular diet. However, it’s important to ensure that the insects you feed your bird are safe and free from harmful chemicals or toxins. You can purchase insects specifically made for pet birds from reputable suppliers or even collect them yourself, but be sure to do so from areas that are free from pesticides and other potential hazards.

Can parrots eat honey? In moderation.

Pasteurized honey is safe for your parrots. Raw honey should be avoided because it contains high levels of botulism and bacteria, which can be fatal to a small animal like your pet. Because honey is high in sugar, it should be fed to your birds sparingly and in small amounts.

Can parrots eat cashews? In moderation.

You can give your parrot a few cashews, but like with all nuts, moderation is key. They have less fiber than many other nuts, but they are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Feed cooked cashews to your parrot instead of ‘raw’ cashews, which may contain traces of the toxin urushiol.

Can parrots eat oatmeal? In moderation.

Larger parrots can eat a spoon of well-cooked, plain, and unsweetened oatmeal. Instant and fruit-flavored oatmeal should be avoided due to their high sugar content. Allow it to cool after cooking to avoid burning your parrot’s tongue. Oatmeal, like bread, should be used as a treat rather than a regular part of your bird’s diet.

Can parrots eat Cheerios? Not recommended.

You can give your pet parrot a few plain Cheerios, but you should avoid giving them any honey-nut or other sweetened cereal. Sugar levels in most cereals are unhealthy for your bird and should be avoided.
